Calderon predicts competitive FIA Euro F3 encounter at Hockenheim

Double R Racing’s Tatiana Calderon will take to Germany’s Hockheim circuit this weekend (3-5 May) for the third instalment of the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season.

The Colombian racer has had a baptism of fire in the F3 European series, as the opening two rounds of the prestigious single-seater championship on the hallowed Monza and Silverstone circuits were held in treacherous wet weather conditions.

However, the 20-year old, keen to impress in her maiden European F3 campaign, has since returned to the historic Silverstone circuit for a highly useful day of testing.

Calderon took advantage of a dry track to acclimatise to her Mercedes-Benz-powered F3 racer and left the Northamptonshire venue having discovered a great deal of pace and confidence behind the wheel.

As a result, the Madrid-based driver is poised for a competitive showing on her first visit to the 4.57km Hockenheim track this weekend, when Euro F3 runs as part of the illustrious support race bill for the German DTM touring car championship.

“It’s true to say that conditions during the first two rounds of the season at Monza and Silverstone weren’t ideal,” said Calderon. “I was delighted that I managed to stay out of trouble and make up positions during the races and have worked hard since the previous round to make sure I continue improving.

“My recent test at Silverstone was very encouraging and I have also spent more time in Double R Racing’s simulator, so I genuinely have more pace and feel far more settled in the car.

She added: “This will be my first visit to Hockenheim and I’m really looking forward to racing on yet another track with so much motorsport history and heritage attached to it. I predict a strong weekend but it’s difficult to set any specific targets in such a competitive championship.”

The European F3 runners will take to the Hockenheim circuit for two 40-minute practice sessions at 13.40 and 14.25 on Friday (3 May), with qualifying for the weekend’s three races taking place later that same day from 17.55.

The first two Euro F3 encounters get under way at 11.10 and 18.05 respectively on Saturday (4 May), while the third race is scheduled for 11.00 on Sunday (5 May).
